 | Haltom City calls Texas Rangers
September 13th, 2002 Byron Harris
WFAA-TV
Haltom City Police Chief Billy Hammitt has called in the Texas Rangers to investigate because Hammitt wants the public to know how concerned his department is about allegations of sexual abuse in the jail.
Hammitt stated, "They will take an active role in any complaints that are brought forward. Obviously we have found out there are three or four potential victims here."
One woman says she was abused by a Haltom City officer and stepped forward to join six other complaints when she heard others claimed to have the same problem.
Hammitt said, "The story on Ch. 8 last night intimated that we were trying to hide some or not fully investigate something and quite honestly that could be nothing farther from the truth."
The chief pointed out that the concern is pointed at the jail, which is manned by civilians, not uniformed officers.
Both the Haltom City police and the Texas Rangers are investigating the Haltom City jail, and there is an ongoing civil investigation that involves a growing number of victims.
